Aging Skin Causes and Effects

Posted   04, Apr 2013

Many individuals whine about the noticeable signs of their aging skin. Many skin product manufacturers made plenty of money because of the desire of these people to attain and sustain younger looking skin. Such products remove age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. They tone skin that is sagging. Aside from buying such skin care products, it is also important to know what are the causes and effects of skin aging and the dos and don'ts when it comes to healthy skin regimen.

There is no way anybody can stop aging because it is a natural course of life. DNA gets damaged naturally as people age, thus changes occur. The production of collagen, a fibrous protein supporting the tissues of the body, slows down resulting to the skin losing its elasticity and strength. Nature allows the skin to regularly get rid of dead skin cells and replace them with new ones so that wrinkles are avoided and the skin becomes soft. When one ages, the growth of such cells slows down as well, thus the skin becomes older-looking. The best thing to do would be to apply cleansers and creams with alpha-hydroxy and vitamin C as the former helps lessen age spots while the latter supports collagen production.

According to studies, above 80% of skin aging can be attributed to the harmful rays of the sun which emit ultraviolet radiation that damages skin cells, thus causing age spots, dry skin, skin cancer and wrinkles. It is important to put on sunscreen everyday to protect the skin from such damage. There are sunscreens, creams, and foundations which have at least SPF 15 that block the UV rays of the sun. It is also advisable to wear a hat to cover the face from the sun, large sunglasses to cover the eyes, and long-sleeved shirts to cover the hands and long pants for the legs.

Another thing that causes aging skin is pollution. When a person is constantly exposed to air pollution, cigarette smoke and environmental toxins, these would destroy skin cells and alter chemicals in the body. This would then hasten the aging process. It is impossible to avoid all of these pollutants because they are everywhere, but they can be minimized by not using toxic chemicals and refraining from smoking. Instead of toxic cleaning products, one can use natural pesticides and household cleaners that are environment-friendly.

Skin aging is also due to gravity which pulls down the skin through the years, thus leading to sagging skin. When cellular renewal and collagen are decreased, this all the more makes the skin weak, thus it can be pulled down easily by gravity. People can counteract this by consuming healthy foods that contain important vitamins such as Vitamins C and E. These are antioxidants that protect and strengthen the skin and prevent fine lines, skin damage and wrinkles. They assist in collagen production to make the skin younger-looking once more.
